“A look behind the scenes ..” – 25 years of Archaeological Working Group Valkenburg.

October 14 to November 29, 2020

In the 25 years that the Archaeological Working Group Valkenburg has been active, the past returns to the present. This exhibition shows the results of archaeological excavations of Genhoes, the Halder Park, the monastery complex in Houthem Sint Gerlach and many other projects. All objects with their own story from the Valkenburg past.

Centuries ago, what did they use to cook, eat, and preserve food? What do misfires tell us? What do we learn from waste pits? Discover how self-sufficient the monks were, see evidence of the many crafts within the monastery of Houthem Sint Gerlach.

The chain with the hands, a tinder box with a hunting scene, the first Maastricht (faience) pottery by Petrus Regout, Militaria from WWII and many ceramic objects. A colorful collection of all kinds of finds!

During the exhibition you will also get a glimpse into the kitchen of archeology and restoration. View and follow the process of searching, excavating, finding and restoring, from the excavated material to an archaeological object.

A film presentation from 1995 about the excavation in Houthem Sint Gerlach can be seen continuously.

On Wednesdays, the working group is present in the museum for questions and possible identification.
